Treatment of Severe Vein Conditions (Venous Ulcers)

Nearly twenty-five million Americans have vein disorders, which range from asymptomatic cosmetic spider veins to severe venous insufficiency. This last group of patients can have with life altering and potentially limb-threatening situations.

A history of longstanding varicose veins which has never been treated, previous deep vein thrombosis, and other medical conditions can lead to chronic lower extremity swelling, skin discoloration (pigmentation) and even breakdown of the affected skin (ulcers). These conditions can also be diagnosed by non-invasive venous Doppler ultrasound in order to outline an appropriate and effective treatment.

Initially, the use of compression bandages can help decrease the swelling and close open wounds. Subsequently, minimally-invasive procedures can be utilized to help prevent the risk of these recurring problems. The use of miniature radiofrequency catheters, as well as endoscopic techniques coupled with balloon technology (Subfascial Endoscopic Perforator Surgery or SEPS), can significantly alter the course of these chronic conditions. Procedures are performed either in an office-based setting or on an outpatient ambulatory basis.

These procedures combined with other conservative measures such as laser vein therapy, can significantly help nearly eight million Americans suffering from acute to less severe vein disorders. They are able to carry on their routines and daily activities, and normalcy can be restored to their lives.
