VNUS Closure®

The radiofrequency VNUS Closure® procedure is a minimally-invasive treatment for superficial venous reflux, a condition that develops when valves that usually keep blood flowing out of your legs become damaged or diseased, resulting in a backward flow of blood. This leads to symptoms such as pain, swelling and varicose veins.

The VNUS Closure® procedure eliminates reflux by closing the problem vein through a patented method: a thin catheter is inserted into the vein through a small opening. The catheter delivers radiofrequency (RF) energy to the vein wall, causing it to heat, collapse, and seal shut. Once the diseased vein is closed, other healthy veins take over.

The VNUS Closure® procedure is a less-painful and less-invasive alternative to surgically removing (stripping) the troublesome vein from your leg, with a shorter recovery period than with vein stripping, or ligation.

In fact, three randomized trials of VNUS Closure® versus vein stripping have proven that the VNUS Closure® procedure offers less pain, a quicker return to daily activities and work, and superior quality-of-life outcomes. A recent study demonstrated that VNUS Closure® patients had significantly less bruising as well.

The VNUS Closure® procedure is one of the only minimally-invasive treatment options that multiple national and regional insurers will accept. Most major health plans have positive coverage policy for the VNUS Closure® procedure (also known as Endovenous Radiofrequency Ablation). As with any vein procedure, medical necessity must be established and documented to obtain insurance coverage.

Some of the benefits of VNUS Closure®:

  • Relief of symptoms - VNUS Closure® works by closing the diseased vein using radiofrequency energy. Once other healthy veins take over, your symptoms should improve noticeably.
  • Convenience - You'll be in and out in the same day and may require only local or regional anesthesia to numb the treatment area.
  • Short recovery time - You should be able to resume your normal activities within 1-2 days.
  • Good cosmetic outcome - Patients report minimal to no scarring, bruising or swelling following the VNUS Closure® procedure.
